Group J
The line-up, a preview, and a steer for your finishing order.
Group J is built around the defending champions. Argentina (CONMEBOL) are second only to Spain in most title-winning models, and with a favourable draw and the experience of winning everything together, they should top the group comfortably-quite possibly in what is Lionel Messi's World Cup farewell. Behind them, the runner-up spot is a proper contest.
Austria (UEFA) are the likeliest challenger: a well-coached, high-pressing side whose system is designed to disrupt exactly the kind of patient build-up Argentina favour. Algeria (CAF) are their direct rivals for second-talented, technical and capable of beating either European side-making the Austria–Algeria meeting a likely decider. Jordan (AFC) are the feel-good story, reaching the World Cup for the first time; organised and motivated, they are nonetheless the outsiders and will measure success in moments.
How to predict it: Argentina as winners is as close to a lock as the group stage offers, so spend your energy on second place. Austria's pressing gives them a slight edge over Algeria, but it's close enough to be a coin-flip. Whichever of Austria or Algeria finishes third is a credible best-thirds option, since both are good enough to bank points against Jordan and at least one of the other contenders-useful if you need to fill out the eight qualifying slots.
